FOR YOUR SAFETY.

Project type

Installation, handmade book (linocut, stamps & ink)

Date

April 2026

Location

Fanshawe College, London ON

This installation brings together a handmade book, a series of linocuts, and a selection of books that have been banned or challenged in school and public libraries in parts of the United States, particularly in states such as Florida and Texas. All of the books displayed were borrowed from my local library in Sarnia.

I created the handmade book using scanned pages from these texts. Across its pages, I’ve layered stamped phrases and quotes taken from political statements and public meetings where decisions about banning books are made. These words often speak in the language of safety, appropriateness, and protection.

You are invited to pick up both the handmade book and the books on the shelf. As you move through them, consider how meaning shifts through removal, framing, and control.

Please explore and read what is available to you. Ask questions about what is not.
